Longest Day of Play

Longest Day of Play: Thursday, June 20, 2024

As we continue our kNOw More in ’24 Campaign, we are excited to spotlight June’s initiative: The Longest Day of Play. This month, we focus on the importance of physical activity in preventing diabetes and promoting overall health.

We will address the need for active living, showcase organizations and resources, and encourage you to plan your own Longest Day of Play event.  Let’s fill the calendar!

The Need for More Activity

Physical inactivity and obesity are significant risk factors for diabetes. In the United States, only 23% of adults meet the recommended guidelines for both aerobic and muscle-strengthening activities, and in Kentucky, that number drops to just 19%. Children and adolescents are also at risk, with only 25% engaging in the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity each day. By getting more active, we can combat these alarming statistics and reduce the incidence of diabetes in our communities.

Heart Health: Regular exercise is crucial for maintaining a healthy heart and reducing the risk of heart disease, which is often associated with diabetes.
Stress Reduction: Physical activity is a powerful tool for managing stress, improving mental health, and enhancing overall well-being.
Reduced Screen Time: Excessive screen time contributes to sedentary lifestyles, obesity, and diabetes. By encouraging active play, we can reduce screen time and promote healthier habits.

Obesity and Physical Inactivity: Key Risk Factors

Obesity is a significant risk factor for diabetes, and physical inactivity is a major contributor to obesity. In the U.S., over 42% of adults and 20% of children are classified as obese. Kentucky’s statistics are even more concerning, with an adult obesity rate of 36.5% and a child obesity rate of 23.8%. Through the Longest Day of Play, we aim to reduce these numbers and promote healthier lifestyles.
